No. 13 Women's Crew Third in Qualifying Heat an NCAAs
May 24, 2001
The No. 13-ranked Cal Women's varsity eight finished third, behind No. 2 Michigan and No. 5 Syracuse, in its qualifying heat at the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships on Lake Lanier in Gainesville, GA, May 24. The Bears will race again at 4 p.m. EDT in the repechage heat as only the first two crews in the qualifier advanced to the semifinal. In the repechage, the top three finishers will join this morning's qualifiers in the semifinal round.
The Bears varsity eight got off the start in good shape and crossed the 500-meter mark in second position one seat down on Syracuse and a seat up on Michigan. By the time the crews reached the 1000, the Wolverines had pulled even with the Bears, but the Orangemen maintained a slight advantage. The race was decided in the third 500 as Michigan and Syracuse put the hammer down taking all the margin they would need to advance.
'We had a good row this morning,' said coach Dave O'Neill. 'Of the crews that we'll see in the reps, I feel like we can beat anybody out there, but I'm sure the coaches of those crews feel the same way. There will be some good racing this afternoon.'
In other racing, the Cal JV eight and varsity four finished fourth in their respective heats and will also need to go through a repechage round to claim a slot in the final. Due to the number of entries, the JV and varsity four repechage will not be contested until Friday, May 25.
