Twenty-One Stanford Athletes Qualify For NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Stanford, Ca - Destination Eugene, Oregon ... That is the site for the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon ... The meet runs from May 30 through June 2 ... The Stanford men's track & field team, 2001 Pacific-10 Conference Champions, will now seek to defend its NCAA title which it captured at Duke University last year ... In 2000, the Stanford men won its first outdoor track & field title since 1934 with 72 points, compared to Arkansas with 59 ... The Cardinal victory broke Arkansas' eight-year hold on the national trophy ... The University of Oregon's track & field facility (Hayward Field) has been the site of eight NCAA track & field championships, three United States Olympic Trials, and the annual Prefontaine Classic ... It will also be the site for the 2001 USA Track & Field Championships this summer.
With the 2001 Stanford outdoor season reaching the finishing line, Cardinal athletes have put together excellent NCAA qualifying times and marks ... Twenty-one Cardinal athletes (Jillian Camarena, Ashley Couper, Kathleen Donoghue, Malindi Elmore, Lauren Fleshman, Sally Glynn, Jason Goff, Anne Gunnison, Seth Hejny, Omer Inan, Gabe Jennings, Milton Little, Maureen Onyeagbako, Michael Ponikvar, Jonathon Riley, Grant Robison, Donald Sage, Michael Stember, Julie Tinker, Laura Turner and Chad Wassink) have qualified for the NCAA Track & Field Championships in Eugene (May 30 - June 2) ... The Cardinal men's track & field team built momentum for the NCAA's with its dramatic team victory at the 2001 Pacific-10 Track & Field Championships (May 19-20) ... Not since the 1927 collegiate outdoor season had Stanford won the conference meet ... Back then, the Pac-10 was known as the Pacific Coast Conference ... The 74-year-old conference-title drought ended as Stanford captured the Pac-10 title with 142 points, six points ahead of conference favorite USC ... Seventy-four of Stanford's 142 points were gained in the 800, 1,500 and the 5,000 meters ... The Cardinal women captured third place honors with 120 1/2 points ... Pac-10 titles were won by Sally Glynn in the 1,500 meters, Gabe Jennings in the 1,500 meters, Michael Ponikvar in the high jump, Michael Stember in the 800 meters and Jesse Thomas in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

Ten school records have already been broken this year ... Chad Wassink broke the 13-year old school record in the javelin with a career-best throw of 234-0 in the javelin at the Mt. Sac Relays (4/22) ... That broke the 1988 record of Dave Pickett at 233-11 ... Kathleen Donoghue broke the school record in the pole vault at 13-3 at the Pac-10 Championships (5/20) ... Jessica Pluth broke the freshman record in the hammer with a toss of 187-0 at the Stanford Invitational (4/1) ... Pluth easily broke the previous record of 163-10 by Maggie Isaac in 1997 ... Pluths' effort is also third-best all-time at Stanford ... Maureen Onyeagbako broke the school record in the hammer at the Big Meet (5/5) with a toss of 192-11 ... Jayna Smith broke the school record in the 400 meters (53.27) at the Pac-10 Championships (5/19) ... Donald Sage broke the freshman school record in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:39.99 at the Cardinal Invitational (5/4) ... The 4 x one mile relay team not only won the Penn Relays championship but also broke the school record ...
