The Cal women's varsity eight closedout the 2001 season with a second-place finish in the petite final to claim theNo. 8 national ranking at the NCAA Rowing Championships on Lake Lanier inGainesville, GA, May 26. Coupled with the JV's eighth place finish and thevarsity four's ninth, the Bears finished the regatta ranked sixth in the NCAA TeamPoints Championship. Pac-10 rival Washington's varsity eight won the nationaltitle followed by Brown, Michigan, USC, Princeton and Syracuse.

'All the crews raced with heart andcourage,' said coach Dave O'Neill. 'I am truly pleased with the sixth placefinish. For this year's group it is tremendous. The crews raced well each chancethey had this weekend. I also want to thank Anne Beaulaurier and Sarah Lovellfor the contributions that they have made over the last four seasons.'

In the varsity eight's petite finalthe Bears led off the line with Ohio State close behind. By the 300 meter-markthe Buckeyes had pulled even. Through the 500, Ohio State had a slightadvantage while the Bears held off Michigan State, Yale, Harvard and BostonUniversity. By the times the crews reached the 1000, Cal was six seats down onOhio State and six seats up on the rest of the field. The Buckeyes poweredthrough the second 1000 meters of the race and Cal held its second-placeposition to finish as the season as the No. 8 crew in the nation. BU finishedthird, followed by Michigan State, Yale and Harvard in that order.

Calwas up a deck on the Tigers heading into the last 500, but didn't have enoughleft to counter Princeton's move with 300 meters to go. The Bears finished, eighth overall in the II Eights division.

In the varsity four petite final,Cal trailed BU, Princeton and Harvard through the first 500 meters. The Bearspulled even with Harvard with 600 meters to go and set their sights onPrinceton and BU, which were battling for the lead.
