No. 1 Men's Crew Travels to IRA Regatta

May 29, 2001

October

This Week:

May 31-June 2, IRA Championships, Cooper River, Camden, NJ, All Day

Racing at the IRA: The No. 1-ranked Cal men's varsity eight will challenge for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship, May 31-June 2, at the IRA Regatta on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, NJ, located just outside Camden. The two-time defending champion, Cal enters the IRA undefeated on the year and ranked No.1 in USRowing Coaches Poll.

IRA Racing Format: Racing at the IRA consists of heats, repechage (second chance), semifinals, and finals. The repechage race assures that the three fastest crews advance to the semifinal round. The winners of each four heats advance to the semifinal round while the remaining crews are reassigned to repechage races. The top two finishers in each rep also advance to the semifinals rounding out the 12 crew field. The top three crews in each semifinal make up the six crews in the grand final. The varsity and frosh eights and varsity four will qualify for the final under this system. Due to the number of entrants in the JV event, the semifinal round may not be needed. If there is no semifinal, winners of the three heats will advance directly to the final and be joined by the winners of each of three repechage heats.

Cal Varsity Eight:

Coming off back-to-back undefeated national championship seasons, the Cal men's varsity eight is the odds-on favorite to win the title again in 2001 with a blend of 1999's power and 2000's efficiency. Unlike last season, when Cal returned only two oarsmen with varsity IRA gold medals to their credit, this year's squad boasts six Olympians, eight returning varsity IRA champions and seven returning freshman IRA champions. The varsity eight is undefeated on the 2001 season including a win at the San Diego Crew Classic, dual race victories against Stanford, No. 10 Oregon State and No. 5 Washington, and its fourth-consecutive Pac-10 championship. To date, Cal has 10 victories over current Top 15 crews to its credit.

IRA Championship History: The Bears have a strong history of racing at the IRA. Over the years, Cal's varsity has accumulated 12 golds, 6 silver, and 6 bronze medals, including its back-to-back national championships in 1999 and 2000. Head coach Steve Gladstone has three Cal IRA championships to his credit (eight overall). Along with the '99 and 2000 crowns, Gladstone directed the 1976 varsity to an IRA win. Bear JV crews have earned 5 golds, 11 silvers, and 9 bronze medals, the last gold coming in 1999, while Cal frosh crews have 4 golds, 8 silvers, and a bronze including last season's win.

Competition Quick Look:

The No. 1 Bears varsity eight will square off against the fastest crews in the country this weekend at the IRA. Early favorites include both the Pac-10 champion Cal and Eastern Sprints champion No. 2 Princeton. Other crews expected to contend include Pac-10 runner-up No. 6 Washington, Eastern Sprints bronze medalist No. 4 Northeastern, No. 5 Brown and No. 7 Penn. No. 3 Harvard and No. 8 Yale do not compete at the IRA.

Use The Force Luke:

Cal senior Luke Walton in on the verge of an undefeated collegiate racing career. Walton rowed 7-seat in the 1998 frosh, 7-seat in the `99 varsity, stroke in the 2000 varsity and currently sits in the 2-seat of the '01 varsity. Over the span of 22 regattas with Walton in the lineup, Cal's freshman and varsity eights have won all 36 starts and defeated 177 challengers. 'I've been very fortunate,' said Walton. 'Rowing is a team sport and the eights that I have raced in have been filled with the best oarsmen in collegiate rowing. While I may be the common denominator in these crews, I credit my teammates for giving me this opportunity.'

Gladstone Named New Cal AD:

On April 30, Steve Gladstone, known for putting students first as coach of eight national championship varsity crews, was named the new athletic director at the University of California. 'Steve Gladstone is the person who can lead this very good program to the next level, to make it an exemplary championship program in every way,' said Chancellor Robert M. Berdahl.

Pac-10 Championship Recap:

The No. 1 Cal men's varsity eight won its fourth consecutive Pac-10 Championship on Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, May 13. The Washington Huskies finished second and Oregon State took the bronze. For the record it is the first time in the 100 plus years of Cal crew history that Cal has won the Pacific Coast/Pac-10 title four years in a row. The Cal JV eight also won and the freshman eight finished second.
