Huskies Complete Day One at NCAA Track Championships

EUGENE, Ore.--Day one of the NCAA Championships brought a mixed bag of results for the Washington Huskies as three of the seven Washington qualifiers participated during Wednesday's action at the NCAAs at Hayward Field in Eugene.
Senior David Bazzi (Seattle, Wash./O'Dea) finished eighth in the 10,000 meters, clocking a 29:53.26. This is Bazzi's first All-American title in three tries. He finished 12th in the 5,000 meters at the NCAA Indoor meet, March 10 and also 12th at the in the 5K at the 2000 Outdoor Championships. Bazzi, who owns both the UW 5,000 and 10,000m records, is doubling in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. The 5,000-meter competition will take place at 8 p.m. Friday.
In other action Wednesday, senior Ja'Warren Hooker (Ellensburg, Wash.) qualified for the finals of the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.46 in his heat of the event. He was the runner-up in his heat and seventh overall going into the finals. The 200-meter finals will take place at 6:35p.m. Saturday.
Hooker is making his fifth overall NCAA appearance. In his two previous outdoor appearances, he finished third in the 100m (1998) and sixth in the 200m (2000).
The third Husky who competed Wednesday was sophomore pole vaulter Brad Walker (Spokane, Wash.). Walker finished tied for 12th in the pole vault final, clearing a height of 16-10 3/4. Walker was making his first NCAA Outdoor appearance after earning All-America status at the NCAA Indoor meet.
Day two action begins at noon Thursday with the 110m hurdles event for the men's decathlon. The Huskies' only competitors in Thursday's action are senior Anna Aoki (Vancouver, Wash.) and sophomore Kate Bradshaw (Issaquah, Wash.) in the women's 10,000-meter run.
