Michael Stember Qualifies For 800 Meter Final at NCAA Track & Field Championships

Eugene, Or - Michael Stember won his heat on Wednesday in the 800 meters with a time of 1:48.06 to advance to the finals at the 2001 NCAA Track & Field Championships at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
Stember produced the second-best time among the eight finalists, which will be contested on Friday (6:10 p.m.). Otukile Lekote of South Carolina had the prelims' best time at 1:47.38. Gabe Jennings placed eleventh overall in the prelims at 1:48.58, but did not qualify for the finals. Lekote, a freshman from Ramotswa, Botswna (Southern Africa), will be the favorite entering Friday's final with a season-best time of 1:44.76. Stember, an eight-time All-America, has the nation's third best time at 1:46.83. Last year at the NCAA's at Duke University, Stember set a school record at 1:46.20 in finishing fourth to gain All-America honors.
Laura Turner qualified for the finals (Friday, 6:55 p.m.) in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a career-best time of 10:15.27. Turner finished fifth in her heat which was won by Rebecca Bennion of Weber State at 10:11.72. The best time was turned in by Nan Evans of Brigham Young with a time of 10:11.54. Turner is one of two Pac-10 runners in the finals along with Arizona State's Kelly MacDonald who ran a 10:12.50.
Jonathon Riley placed ninth in the 10,000 meter finals in a time of 30:00.46. Ryan Shay of Notre Dame won the NCAA title with a time of 29:05.44.
Chad Wassink placed eleventh in the javelin at 216-3. John Stiegeler of Oregon won the title with a toss of 252-10.
Jason Goff, who had finished second at the recent Pacific-10 Championships with a career-best 7,428 points in the decathlon, was forced to withdraw after one event with an ailing back and shoulder. Goff had started the competition with a time of 11.41 in the 100 meters, good for 771 points, before retiring.
Oregon's men's team leads the competition after day one (three final events) with 16 points. USC and Notre Dame are second with ten points apiece. Other Pac-10 teams include California (13th, four points), Arizona State (16th, three points) and Washington (20th, one point).
In women's competition (two final events), Arizona and Idaho each have ten points. Other Pac-10 teams include UCLA (5th, six points) and Arizona State (5th, six points).
Thursday, Stanford will send ten athletes into competition at the NCAA's, Michael Ponikvar in the high jump finals (4:45 p.m.), Milton Little in the long jump finals (5:00 pm.), Ashley Couper, Malindi Elmore and Sally Glynn in the prelims of the 1,500 meters (6:00 p.m.), Jillian Camarena in the finals of the shot put (6:00 p.m.), Jennings, Donald Sage and Stember in the prelims of the 1,500 meters (6:15 p.m.), and Anne Gunnison in the 10,000 meter finals (7:50 p.m.).
