All Men's Crews Advance At IRA Championships

May 31, 2001

The Cal men's varsity eight won its opening round heat at the IRA National Championship regatta on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, NJ, May 31. The win advanced the Bears to the semifinal in the Varsity Challenge Cup. The top three finishers in the each of Friday's two semifinals will advance to the grand final and race for the National Championship on Saturday, June 2. Cal's JV and freshman eights along with the varsity four also won their respective heats and advanced.

'It was a good day for all our crews,' said coach Steve Gladstone. 'They started the regatta with some solid performances.'

In the varsity heat, the Bears got off to a quick start and immediately took a four-seat advantage over Wisconsin. Cal had a length by the 750-meter mark and had broken open water by the 1000. Cal controlled the race from the front, taking the win and advancing to the semifinal. Ironically, Cal's winning time was the slowest of any varsity heat, but it was evident that there was plenty of untapped speed as the crew rowed the final 500 meters at approximately 30 strokes per minute. Princeton, Brown and Penn won the other heats and advanced with Cal to the semifinal round, while the other semifinalists will be determined in the repechage round Thursday afternoon.

The Cal JV also had a strong row. The Bears led Northeastern by a deck after the first 30 strokes and increased it to a half-length by the 850-meter mark. At the 1000, Cornell had moved past Northeastern and began to pressure the Bears, but Cal maintained a one-length advantage over the second half of the race. Due to the number of entries, the JV's victory advanced it directly to Saturday's final along with the Wisconsin and Brown crews that won the other heats. The JV repechage will be held on Friday for the three berths in the final that are still up for grabs.

The Cal freshman eight put together a solid 2000 meters and advanced to the semifinal in its event. The Bears led Wisconsin and Marietta off the line with BU and Penn trailing. Cal led by four seats at the 600-meter mark as Wisconsin and broken open water on the remainder of the field. The Bears continued to move out to a length advantage in the third 500 before Wisconsin shut down with 500 to go. Cal went on two win by two lengths. Brown, Washington and Princeton were winners in each of their respective heats at the frosh level.

In the varsity four event, the Bears took the hole shot and established an open-water lead over Wisconsin by the 600-meter mark. Cal rowed comfortably over the final 1400 meters taking the win and advancing to Friday's semifinal.
