14 Cougs In Major/Minor Leagues

PULLMAN, Wash. -- - A total of 14 Washington State University Cougar baseball players are currently playing professional baseball, including four in the Major Leagues.

Heading the list are John Olerud and Aaron Sele, two key players in the Seattle Mariners' surge to the top of professional baseball. Both past Cougars are expected to be among the top players selected to play in the MLB All-Star game in Seattle. Olerud is currently the number two first baseman in fan balloting. Mike Kinkade with Baltimore and Scott Hatteberg with Boston round out the former WSU players now playing in the Major Leagues.

Ten Cougars are listed on minor league rosters, including six in triple-A league players: pitchers Todd Belitz, Mark Hendrickson, Rob Ramsay and David Wainhouse, catcher Jim Horner and outfielder Rob Ryan. The other four minor leaguers are outfielder Jason Grove and three pitchers, Wade Parrish, Ole Vigeland and Matt O'Brien.

Sele became the American League's first eight-game winner this season while picking up a 3-2 win over Baltimore Thursday. Sele is 8-0 and Seattle has won all 11 games he has started. He has posted a 2.65 ERA and leads the Mariners with 71.1 innings and 11 starts. Sele's control has been outstanding with just 11 walks to go with 29 strikeouts.

Olerud is currently Seattle's number two hitter, boasting a .346 batting average, with six home runs, nine doubles and 40 RBIs. His .448 on-base percentage also tops the team, which includes his 65 hits and 36 walks.

Hatteberg is currently Boston's number two catcher and is hitting .167 for the Red Sox in 19 games. He has one home run and three doubles among his eight hits.

Kinkade is currently hitting .267 for Baltimore in 26 games. The third baseman has 20 hits, two home runs and one double in his 75 at-bats.

Through May, pitcher Wade Parrish and outfielder Rob Ryan are having the best seasons among the 10 Cougars in the minor leagues. Parrish is a perfect 3-0 with a 1.63 ERA for the Vero Beach Dodgers. Parrish has thrown 27.2 innings in relief while striking out 29 and walking just five batters. He has been to the mound 16 times. Ryan is making a strong bid to join the parent Arizona Diamondbacks. Currently with the Tucson Sidewinders, Ryan is hitting .391 with 10 home runs and 14 doubles in 53 games.

Todd Belitz - Has posted a 1-2 record with a 4.32 ERA in 18 trips to the mound and 25.0 innings for the Sacramento River Cats of the PCL, property of the Oakland Athletics.

Jason Grove - Currently hitting .239 in 48 games, with six home runs and 31 RBI for the Greensboro Bats of the South Atlantic League, property of the New York Yankees.

Mark Hendrickson - The former Cougar basketball and baseball player has a 2-5 record and a 5.66 ERA in 13 games for the Syracuse SkyChiefs of the International League...he has thrown 41.1 innings and struck out 11, property of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Jim Horner - Hitting .286 for the Tacoma Rainiers of the PCL...has played in 25 games and belted three home runs and seven doubles, property of the Seattle Mariners.

Matt O'Brien - Has posted a 5-2 record for Visalia of the California League, throwing 53.0 innings...has a 3.91 ERA with 53 strikeouts and just 16 walks, property of the Oakland Athletics.

Wade Parrish - A perfect 3-0 with a sparkling 1.63 ERA and four saves for the Vero Beach Dodgers in the Florida State League...29 strikeouts and just five walks in 27.2 innings and 16 appearances.

Rob Ramsay - In nine mound appearances has posted a 5-3 record and a 3.81 ERA with the Tacoma Rainiers of the PCL...has thrown 49.2 innings and has struck out 36 while walking 23, property of the Seattle Mariners.

Rob Ryan - Currently hitting .391 for the Tucson Sidewinders of the PCL, with 10 home runs and 14 doubles in 53 games, property of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Ole (Will) Vigeland - Has a 3-1 record and a 2.79 ERA in 16 trips to the mound...has struck out 30 with 15 walks in 29.0 innings for the Savannah Sand Gnats, property of the Texas Rangers.

David Wainhouse - Currently 2-3 with a 4.15 ERA for the Iowa Cubs of the PCL...has 24 strikeouts and nine walks in 26.0 innings, property of the Chicago Cubs.
