Mike Esposito Invited To Team USA National Team Trials

June 6, 2001

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona State University redshirt freshman starting pitcher Mike Esposito was announced as one of four more collegiate players that have been invited to participate in the 2001 USA Baseball National Team Trials - to be held in Tucson, Arizona June 16-19. The USA National Team will be selected from a pool of 29 players, of which 25 have already been announced.

Esposito, who was 5-2 with a 4.06 ERA in 2001, was named an honorable mention All-Pac-10 and Freshman All-American (Collegiate Baseball) selection. Coming off Tommy John surgery on his right pitching elbow, Esposito jumped into the starting rotation in early March, only 10 months after his surgery. He was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week (May 9) after throwing a two-hitter over six innings vs. nationally ranked Tennessee. The product of Cimarron High School in Las Vegas, was a fifth round draft choice by the Cincinnati Reds in 1999.

If Esposito makes the team, he will become the fourth Sun Devil in recent years to play for the Team USA National team. Casey Myers and Jon Switzer, who were both selected in yesterday's Major League draft, had strong summers with the National team in the summer of 2000 and former ASU great and current Seattle Mariner minor league prospect Willie Bloomquist spent the 1998 summer with Team USA.

Team USA will play 30 games on the Red, White and Blue Summer Tour, beginning on June 18 with an exhibition game against the Chicago Cubs rookie level affiliate at HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona. Team USA will then travel to the 30th annual USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series, which this year will be played in Japan. Mississippi State's Pat McMahon will serve as the head coach for Team USA. He will be assisted by Dusty Rhodes of North Florida, Paul Stevens of Northwestern, and Bob Todd of Ohio State. For interested scouts, this team will be holding practice sessions at the Hi Corbett Field facilities in Tucson beginning Saturday, June 16. The official team roster will be determined and announced on June 19.
