June 7, 2001
Omaha, Neb. - Stanford sophomore catcher Ryan Garko is scheduled to catch the first pitch expected to be thrown out by President George W. Bush at the opening of the 2001 College World Series on Friday. Stanford (48-16) plays Tulane (55-11) in the first game of the event, scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m., Central Time.
'I'm pretty excited,' said Garko about the opportunity. 'It's not something that many people get to do -- to meet the President and shake his hand. It's something I'll remember for the rest of my life.'
When asked who he voted for in the last election, Garko responded, 'I voted for President Bush. I think he's a great President.'
