Cal Sends Nine Athletes to USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

BERKELEY - The California men's and women's track and field teams will be well represented at the USA Outdoor Championships Thurs.-Sun., June 21-24, in Eugene, Ore. Four current Golden Bears, along with five alumni, will be vying for national crowns in a total of eight different events.
Asmerom is coming off a second-place finish in the 5000m (13:43.13) at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, June 1, at the same Hayward Field. Lawson competed in the shot at both NCAA meets this year, earning All-America honors for her third-place finish at the indoor meet with an all-time best throw of 53-7.5. DeSomber captured All-America accolades in the shot at NCAA outdoors, finishing ninth with a heave of 60-7.25.
Vanek was forced to redshirt the 2001 season with a stress fracture in her back but is prepared to compete this weekend. She garnered All-America recognition for her third-place performance in the heptathlon at the 2000 NCAA Championships with a career-best 5614 points.
Representing the former Cal greats are Chris Huffins and Grace Upshaw in the long jump, Sheila Hudson in the triple jump, Kristin Heaston in the shot put and Bevan Hart in the decathlon. Hart may be Cal's best chance of a national title, as he enters the competition with the second-best qualifying total (8002 points) in his event.
