15 UCLA T & F Athletes Earn 2001 Academic All-Pac-10 Honors

Fifteen UCLA track and field athletes, including senior Joe Franklin and junior Bryan Green earning first-team honors, were named to the 2001 Pacific-10 All-Academic T & F Team, announced Tuesday by Commissioner Tom Hansen.
Franklin, a javelin thrower with a season-best mark of 193-3, earned first-team honors with a 3.40 grade point average (gpa), majoring in Chinese. In 1999 as a sophomore, Franklin was honorable mention Academic All-Pac-10 and as a junior in 2000, he earned second-team All-Academic. Green, who placed third (29:45.30) in the 10,000m at the Pac-10, was another first-team selection, with a 3.42gpa in philosophy. As a sophomore in 2000, Green was an honorable mention Academic All-Pac-10 selection.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall gpa and be either a starter or significant contributor.

-sophomore Jack Clamon, with a season-best 57-8 1/2 in the shot put.
-sophomore Jared Drake, who was third (17-3, personal-best) in the pole vault at the Pac-10.
-sophomore Nate Marum, 13th (211-5) in the javelin at the NCAA Outdoor and fourth (217-10) at the Pac-10.
-junior Andrew Wulf, 12th (9:15.91) in the 3000m steeplechase at the Pac-10.
-junior Heather Sickler, with a 3.53gpa in psychology. She was ninth (12-9 1/2) in the pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor and 13th (12-3 1/4) at the Pac-10. In 2000, Sickler was honorable mention Academic All-Pac-10.
-sophomore Karen Bewley, with a personal-best 12-6 in the pole vault.
-sophomore Tiffany Burgess, who qualified for the NCAA Outdoor in the 800m (2:06.13) and placed sixth (2:06.92) at the Pac-10.
-senior Gina Donnelly, who ran personal-bests this season of 4:39.00 (1500m),11:10.65 (3000m steeplechase) and 18:39.04 (5000m) and a season-best 10:57.50 (3000m).
-Erica Hoernig, 12th (12-3 1/2) in the pole vault at the NCAA Outdoor and eighth(12-11) at the Pac-10. This is Hoernig's third honorable mention Academic All-Pac-10 honor.
-senior Heather Newlin, 14th (5-5) in the high jump at the Pac-10.
-freshman Lena Nilsson, who placed ninth (2:11.95) in the 800m at the NCAA Outdoor and third (2:06.08, season-best) at the Pac-10.
-sophomore Bridget Pearson, with season-bests of 11-11 3/4 in the pole vault and 124-8 in the javelin.
-sophomore Chaniqua Ross, who at the NCAA Outdoor was third (180-9) in thediscus and 14th (50-11 1/2) in the shot put and at the Pac-10, won (177-3) the discus and placed ninth (48-0 3/4) in the shot put.
