Linnen Named USATF Athlete of the Week
June 20, 2001
University of Arizona freshman Amy Linnen won the pole vault competition at the 2001 U.S. Junior National Championships in Richmond, Va., over the weekend, setting an American Junior Record in the process. She was also named the Athlete of the Week by the USATF Tuesday.
Linnen, who hails from Mt. Siani, N.Y., won the pole vault with a clearance of 13-9 (4.21m). Linnen's mark eclipsed that of California high school athlete Shayla Balentine, who cleared 13-8 two weeks ago.
The U.S.A. Track and Field organization also named her the Athlete of the Week for her efforts.
Linnen's mark set an Arizona school record in the process. She broke the outdoor mark of 13-9 (4.20m) set by senior Andrea Dutoit on June 1 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, where Dutoit won the title.
Her win also qualified her for the U.S. team at the Junior Pan American Championships, Oct. 18-20, in Santa Fe, Argentina.
