Men's Golf Season In Review

Year In Review: The Stanford men's golf team finished the 2000-01 season ranked 33rd in the MasterCard Collegiate Golf rankings ... The Cardinal competed in 14 events with one tournament victory at the Fresno Lexus Classic ... They played 42 rounds of golf (12,815 strokes) with a 305.1 stroke average ... The team notched six top five finishes and 11 top 10 finishes ... Stanford took sixth at the Pac-10 Championships and tied for sixth at the NCAA West Regional.
Dahlberg and Rowe Earn GCAA All-America Scholar Accolades: Stanford golfers Eric Dahlberg (Fort Worth, TX) and Philip Rowe (Cornwall, UK) were selected as a GCAA (Golf Coaches Association of America)All-America scholar for their performance athletically and scholastically during the 2000-01 season. To qualify for the honor, student-athetes had to maintain a minimum GPA, compete in at least 75 percent of their team's varsity competition, be a junior or senior academically and maintain a minimum stroke average set by the GCAA.
NCAA Championships Wrap Up: The Stanford men's golf team shot an 593 (297-296) at the NCAA Men's Golf Championships to tie for 20th overall. Only the top 15 teams advanced to the third round of play as well as the top nine individuals not on those teams. Sophomore Jim Seki shot a two-day total of 146 (73-73) while junior Philip Rowe carded a 149 (73-76). Jimmy Lee checked in with a 152 (76-76) along with Eric Dahlberg (75-77). Alex Aragon DQ'ed on the first day and shot a 71 on day two.
Two Cardinal Golfers Garner All-Conference Honors: Junior golfer Philip Rowe and senior Alex Aragon garnered all-conference honors for their performance during the 2000-01 season. Rowe was a second-team selection while Aragon picked up honor mention accolades. Rowe, a junior from Cornwall, UK, leads the Cardinal with a 72.9 stroke average and has eight top 25 finishes this year. Aragon, who hails from San Diego, CA, was Stanford's top finisher at Pac-10s with a tie for seventh.
Did You Know: Stanford had 11 top-10 finishes in 14 tournaments this season ... they has six top-5 finishes ... the Cardinal took home the title at the Fresno Lexus Classic earlier this season ... In their first round at the John Burns Intercollegiate, Stanford fired a 13-under 275, which is the second-lowest under par round in school history ... the Cardinal's 13-under par 851 at the Fresno Lexus Classic is the fourth lowest team tournament score in school history ... with his round of 66 at the John Burns Intercollegiate, Alex Aragon becomes only the sixth Cardinal to do so.
Dahlberg and Rowe Pick Up Pac-10 All-Academic Honors: Eric Dahlberg and Philip Rowe continued to add to their postseason accolades as both were named to the 2000-01 Pac-10 Men's Golf All-Academic Team. Dahlberg was a first team selection while Rowe earned second team honors.
Head Coach Jeff Mitchell: A former professional golfer on the PGA Tour and director of golf at Texas Tech, Jeff Mitchell finished his first year as the head men's golf coach at Stanford. Mitchell spent the last 10 years as the head women's golf coach at Texas Tech, an in 1998, he became the golf director for both the men's and women's programs. He was named District Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1996 and the Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1996. For nine years (1976-84), Mitchell was on the PGA Tour, playing in an average of 30 tournaments a year. He won the Phoenix Open in 1980 and had a dozen top-10 finishes as well as making 111 career cuts. A 1989 graduate of Texas Tech, Mitchell earned a degree in physical education and received his teaching certification in 1990. He competed for the Red Raiders from 1974-76, picking up All-Southwest Conference honors as well as being named an honorable mention All-American.
