June 22, 2001
University of Arizona junior Brianna Glenn returned to the place where she won two NCAA titles earlier this month and finished third in the long jump competition Thursday at the U.S. Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Glenn jumped 21-feet, 3 1/2-inches (6.49m) to finish third behind Jenny Adams and Grace Upshaw, who finished first and second, respectively. The top three finishers in each event qualify for the U.S. team at the World Championships in Edmonton, Canada, Aug. 3-12.
'It wasn't a personal record, but here you have to jump to beat the other people in the competition,' associate head coach Fred Harvey said. 'In terms of making the team, she did a great job and came through when it mattered.'
Glenn will have to reach the `A' standard for the Championships, which is 22-2 (6.75m). She can qualify by jumping that at any competition until the World Championships.
Former Arizona star Abdi Abdirahman won the men's 10,000m, his first national championship. He ran 28:23.82 to beat Meb Keflezighi, who finished in 28:39.64. Abdirahman finished third at the Olympic Trials last season and was 10th in the Summer Olympics.
Glenn also ran 11.21 (wind-aided) in her heat of the women's 100m quarterfinals and easily qualified for tomorrow's semifinals. She finished second in the behind Inger Miller, who ran 11.10, and had the fifth-best time overall in the quarters.
Former Wildcat Michelle Johnson ran the fastest time in the four heats of the 400m hurdles qualifying and advanced to tomorrow's semifinals. She clocked a time of 55.87 seconds, while the No. 2 qualifier was Sandra Glover in 56.23. Johnson will run in the semifinals tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. and attempt for Saturday's finals, which are at 4:30 p.m.
She will run in the semifinals tomorrow afternoon at 5:23 p.m. If she is amongst the top eight finishers in the semis, she will run in the finals tomorrow at 6:52 p.m.
