Bengals Reach Deal with Stanford Draftee, LB Riall Johnson

July 11, 2001

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Cincinnati Bengals have agreed to terms of athree-year contract with sixth-round draft choice Riall Johnson, a linebackerfrom Stanford.

It was Cincinnati's second such deal in two days. Team officials saidArizona State offensive lineman Victor Leyva, the Bengals' fifth-round draftchoice, agreed to terms of a three-year deal on Tuesday.

Johnson was the fifth pick of the sixth round, and 168th selection overall. He is the first Stanford player drafted by the Bengals since quarterback Mike Boryla was selected in the fourth round in 1974.

Johnson was the second Stanford player selected in the draft, as defensive tackle Willie Howard went to the Minnesota Vikings as the 26th pick in the second round and 57th overall. The selection of Johnson and Howard marked the fifth time in Tyrone Willingham's six seasons that a Stanford player has been drafted.

One of the top pass rushers in Stanford history, Johnson became the only player in Pac-10 history to lead the conference in quarterback sacks in back-to-back seasons. The 2000 Football News Second Team All-America and First Team All-Pac-10 selection had 15 sacks last fall, after recording 13 in 1999. The 15 sacks ranks tied for second in school single season history, while the 13 is tied for fourth. Johnson concluded his career with 36 quarterback sacks and 52 tackles-for-loss.

The 1999 Second Team All-Pac-10 selection played defensive end his first two seasons, before being moved to outside linebacker before his junior campaign. He also helped lead the Cardinal to a Pac-10 Championship and Rose Bowl appearance in 1999.
