Esposito Pitches Team USA Past Great Lakes All-Stars

ATHENS, OHIO -- Team USA's Mike Esposito (RHP, Fr, Arizona State) twirledseven scoreless innings and Bryan Bullington (RHP, So, Ball State) worked thefinal two for his first save as the USA Baseball National Team improved to10-5-1 overall with a 3-0 shutout of the Great Lakes League All-StarsSaturday afternoon at Bob Wren Stadium in Athens, Ohio - on the campus ofOhio University.

Esposito (Las Vegas) improved to 1-1 with a 2.41 ERA this summer with the Red, White and Blue in his three starts. Esposito was named honorable mention All-Pac-10 and was a Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American after going 5-2 with a 4.06 ERA for the Sun Devils in 2001. Esposito, who had Tommy John surgery after making just two starts in 2000, will be a redshirt sophomore for the 2002 season.

Playing as the home team, the Red, White and Blue opened the day's scoring inthe second when they plated an unearned run off Great Lakes starter DanHorvath. Ryan Hubele (DH, So, Texas) led off with a single and moved up on aKevin Howard (IF, So, Miami) infield hit. When GLL first baseman Kelly Hunttried to nail Hubele going to third, the throw was wild and Hubele racedhome, giving Team USA a 1-0 advantage.

It stayed that way until the sixth, when Jeff Baker (IF, So, Clemson) led offwith a double into the right-center field gap and later scored on a two-out,base hit by Howard that made it 2-0. Team USA's Michael Aubrey (OF, Fr,Tulane) provided a third run with a solo homer to right in the eighth offSteve Obenchain.

But Esposito was the story. The ASU freshman righty from Las Vegas allowedjust five hits while fanning nine, to pick up his first win of the summer forTeam USA, evening his record at 1-1. He worked out of three different jamsafter allowing leadoff doubles on three occasions. Bullington struck out fourof the seven batters he faced in notching the save.

Team USA also won the pre-game, home run derby by a 7-3 score. Chris Snyder(C, So, Houston) took the individual honors by hitting three balls over thefence (Baker 2, Howard 2, Aubrey 0). Three players from the Great LakesLeague each hit one homer.

The 2001 USA Baseball National Team Red, White and Blue Tour continues onSunday evening in Torrington, Connecticut when Team USA will battle theTorrington Twisters of the New England Collegiate League at 7:00 pm.
