July 16, 2001
Corvallis, Ore. - Fisher Broadcasting of Seattle, the parent company of KVAL-TV in Eugene, and Beaver Sports Properties, a division of Learfield Communications, have entered into a two-year joint venture to air various Oregon State University athletic events and produce several OSU magazine shows. The announcement was made Monday.
The venture includes live television broadcasts of possibly one football game during the 2001 season and up to six basketball contests, with the clearance of Fox Sports Net and the Pacific-10 Conference. In addition, approximately eight 30-minute packages will be produced during the year featuring the preseason previews for football, and men's and women's basketball, the Northwest Dodge Dealers Civil War preview, and other OSU athletic-related features. The first segment will air in September, previewing the football season.
'Oregon State University is extremely excited to begin this relationship with Fisher Broadcasting and its family of stations throughout the state,' Director of Athletics Mitch Barnhart said. 'It is an exciting time for our athletic department and it is beneficial for us to be able to work with a group of professionals in the communication industry who can help share our story with our fans, friends, and family. I'm very appreciative of the efforts of Dave Weinkauf (G.M. KVAL-TV) and our staff at Beaver Sports Properties for their efforts in putting this venture together, and look forward to growing this relationship for years to come.'
The Fisher Broadcasting network consists of KVAL, KCBY in Coos Bay, KPIC in Roseburg. The BSP television network will also include stations in Medford and Portland.
'One of our goals at BSP is to foster these types of relationships for the OSU Athletic Department,' BSP General Manager Rick Thompson said. 'This state wants more OSU programming and information, as is evident in our expansion to 30 network radio stations throughout the state as well as the tremendous response we receive from our website (osubeavers.com).'
In addition to the production of live games and special shows, KVAL-TV, with sports director Todd McKim and his staff, will feature 10-minute all-inclusive segments about Beaver athletics on its 11 p.m. Sunday newscast from early September through late March.
