UCLA's Mohini Bhardwaj To Compete At U.S. Classic
July 19, 2001
Two-time NCAA champion and 2001 Collegiate Gymnast of the Year Mohini Bhardwaj (UCLA/Cincinnati, OH) will compete against some of the nation's elite gymnasts at the U.S. Classic, July 20-22, at the Bronco Gymnasium on the campus of California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, CA.
Bhardwaj, 22, is returning to elite gymnastics after four years during which she won two NCAA individual (2000 uneven bars, 2001 floor exercise) and two team titles (2000, 2001) and captured the 2001 Honda Award as the nation's top collegiate gymnast. As a Bruin from 1998-2001, Bhardwaj reset the UCLA record books, scoring eight perfect 10s and recording an all-around total of 39.975 out of 40 in a dual meet earlier this year.
Bhardwaj was a member of the U.S. National Team from 1992-97 and placed fifth on vault at the 1997 World Championships. She competed at the 1996 Olympic Trials, where she placed 10th, and was the national runner-up on beam that same year.
The U.S. Classic serves as a qualification event and preview for the upcoming U.S. Gymnastics Championships, August 8-11 in Philadelphia.
The U.S. Gymnastics Championships is the qualification event for the 2001 World Championships Team. Six gymnasts will represent the United States at the World Championships, October 28-November 4 in Ghent, Belgium.
Possible senior competitors in the U.S. Classic include Bhardwaj, 2000 Olympian Tasha Schwikert and national team members Marie Fjordholm, Ashley Kelly, Ashley Miles, Amanda Stroud, Rachel Tidd (San Marcos, CA) and Tabitha Yim (Irvine, CA).
