Mike Esposito Masterful Again In Leading Team USA To 4-1 Win Over Newport Gulls

NEWPORT, Rhode Island -- Arizona State freshman right-handed pitcher Mike Esposito pitched seven innings and limited the Newport Gulls to one run on six hits to earn hissecond straight win as the USA Baseball National Team (14-5-1) was victoriousby a 4-1 score Thursday evening at historic Cardines Field in Newport, RhodeIsland.

It was Team USA's sixth consecutive triumph on the 2001 Red, White and BlueTour.

The game was scoreless on two hits apiece into the fourth, when Team USAtallied twice off Newport starter Jeff Lacher (2-3). A walk and an error puta pair of runners on the bases, and after Ryan Hubele (DH, So, Texas)sacrificed them into scoring position, Omar Quintanilla (IF, Fr, Texas)singled to right field for both RBI's, giving Team USA a 2-0 lead.

The Red, White and Blue added two more in the fifth when Jeremy Reed (IF, So,Long Beach St.) singled to lead off and later came around on Jeff Baker's(IF, So, Clemson) triple. Kevin Howard (IF, So, Miami) picked up Baker with abase hit, making it 4-0.

The Gulls finally touched Esposito for a run in the seventh on a pair ofdoubles by Paul Johnston and Billy Grasier, slicing the National Team's leadto 4-1. Esposito (2-1) finished seven innings and fanned eight, giving upjust the one run. He was relieved by Royce Ring (LHP, So, San Diego St.) inthe eighth, and Bob Zimmermann (RHP, Fr, SW Missouri St.) in the ninth.Zimmermann notched his team-leading third save.

Both Reed (10 games) and Baker (9 games) were able to extend their personalhitting streaks.

Note: Team USA righthander Anthony Reyes (RHP, So, USC) was forced to leaveTeam USA and return home to Los Angeles yesterday due to a fatigued rightshoulder. That leaves the USA National Team with 19 players.
