WSU Women's Basketball Announces 2001-2002 Schedule
July 26, 2001
PULLMAN, Wash. - A visit to Hawaii and the Pacific-10/Big Ten Challenge underline the 2001-02 schedule for the Washington State women's basketball team as announced by head coach Jenny Przekwas, Thursday.
The Cougars begin the regular season at the Waikiki Beach/Marriott Resort Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii, Nov. 17-18. Along with the host University of Hawaii, the Cougars will join Portland State and Texas A&M in the two-day tournament. This will be the Cougars' first trip to the islands since December, 1997 when WSU played in the Kona Basketball Classic at Hilo.
'The Hawaii tournament will be a great opener,' said Przekwas. 'It's always an exciting trip to the islands, and Hawaii has a good program coming off of a great year.'
Another highlight of the Cougars' non-conference schedule is the Pac-10/Big Ten Challenge at Seattle. WSU will face the University of Michigan, Dec. 7 and Indiana University, Dec. 9. Both Michigan (NCAA Tournament) and Indiana (WNIT) advanced to postseason play last season.
'The Pac-10/Big Ten Challenge games will offer us excellent competition against Michigan and Indiana, as well as a chance to play two more games in front of our west-side Cougar fans,' said Przekwas.
In between the Hawaii trip and the Challenge, WSU will travel to BYU (Nov. 24) followed by four games in the Palouse during a span of 10 days. The Cougars will host Portland State (Nov. 26), Gonzaga (Nov. 29) and Montana (Dec. 1) before traveling across the border to face Palouse rival Idaho, Dec. 5. In addition, WSU completes its non-conference schedule by hosting Montana State, Dec. 16.
'Our December home schedule brings in quality teams from the Northwest, which will build excitement for Pac-10 play in January,' said Przekwas.
WSU inaugurates the Pac-10 schedule with three consecutive road games beginning with a return trip to Seattle to face Washington, Dec. 21. WSU continues the road swing at Oregon State, Dec. 28 before concluding the stretch at the site of the inaugural Pac-10 Tournament (March 1-4, 2002) against Oregon, Dec. 30.
The Cougars' conference home openers take place against USC, Friday, Jan. 4 and UCLA, Sunday, Jan. 6.
During the 2000-01 season, WSU faced six teams that advanced to the 2000 NCAA Tournament and eight teams the year before that. The 2001-02 schedule features five teams (Michigan, Arizona State, Oregon, Stanford, Washington) that made it to the 2001 dance.
