Megan Cooke Takes Silver At Nations Cup Regatta

Cal senior Megan Cooke, who was recently named to the CRCA All-American women's rowing team, rowed bow seat in silver medal-winning USA women's four at the 2001 Nations Cup (under 23 world championships) in Linz, Austria, July 29.
The USA four of made a furious charge during the final 500 meters of the race to overtake Germany. The U.S. crew was 1.07 seconds behind Germany at the 1,500-meter mark but came back to win the silver medal by 0.73 second. Australia won the race in a time of 6:50.93. The U.S. clocked a 6:52.90, while Germany crossed the line with a time of 6:53.63.
The Golden Bears were also represented in the women's single by sophomore Martha Helgeland, who was rowing for her native Norway. After missing out on the A final due to a third-place finish in the repechage, Helgeland rebounded with a strong second-place showing in the B final for an overall eighth-place finish.
In other women's rowing news, alumni Megan Dirkmaat and Caroline Ingham raced in the winning elite eight at the USRowing National Championship Regatta, July 29. Both seem to be on track to represent the U.S. at the World Championships in August.
