USA Softball Update from Pan-Am Qualifier

USA advances in playoffs with 6-0 win over host Venezuela at Pan Am Qualifier
Maracay, Venezuela---The USA passed its first real test of the 2001 Pan Am Qualifier by defeating host Venezuela 6-0 in front of a standing room only crowd estimated at over 2,500. Jennie Finch (La Mirada, CA) dominated the Venezuelan team allowing only one hit while striking out 14 batters.
The USA bats were once again silenced in the first two innings but came alive in the third. Lauren Bauer (Santa Ana, CA) began the offensive attack with a single to shortstop and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nichole Thompson (Irvine, Ca). Nina Lindenberg (Anaheim Hills, CA) then singled up the middle to score Bauer and collect her ninth RBI of the tournament. Jenny Topping (Whittier, CA) kept the inning going with a double to left field that scored Lindenberg. The final run of the inning came when Jaime Clark (Tustin, CA) hit a triple down the right field line that plated Topping and gave the USA a 3-0 advantage.
Thompson added a run in the fourth with a single up the middle that scored Courtney Dale (Fresno, CA) who reached first after being hit by a pitch.
Topping continued to be in a hitting zone in the seventh inning. Lindenberg led off with a walk and scored on a home run by Topping to left field.
For the game, Topping went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and three RBI. Clark was the only other player to post more than one hit in the game. The USA is now hitting .389 as a team and is the only team to not allow a run in the tournament. Opponents are hitting a mere .048 and have struck out an average of 10 times per game.
The USA continues playoff action tomorrow at 7 p.m. versus the winner of Canada/Netherlands Antillas. The winner will advance to the finals on Friday.

USA defeats Bahamas 12-0 to finish undefeated in pool play at Pan Am Qualifier
Maracay, Venezuela---The USA defeated the Bahamas, 12-0, tonight to finish as the only undefeated in its pool at the 2001 Pan Am Qualifier. The USA will now advance to the playoff round to face the No. 2 seed in pool B at 5 p.m. tomorrow.
After being shutout in the first two innings of the game, the USA's bats came alive in the top of the third inning. Nichole Thompson (Irvine, CA) walked, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a double by Nina Lindenberg (Anaheim Hills, CA). Jenny Topping (Whittier, CA) then doubled to left center to score Lindenberg. A home run by Jaime Clark (Tustin, CA) cleared the bases and gave the USA a 4-0 lead.
Jennie Finch (La Mirada, CA) continued the rally with a double to right field and advanced to third on a throwing error by the right fielder. Toria Auelua (Garden Grove, CA) scored Finch on a sacrifice fly to right field. The final run of the inning came when Jarrah Myers (Carbondale, KS) singled to center field and eventually scored on a fielding error.
The USA scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a commanding 10-0 lead. Lindenberg led off the top of the inning with a solo home run to right field, her first of the tournament. Auelua drove in two more runs with a single up the middle that scored Topping and Clark. Kim DePaul (Houston, TX), who had singled earlier in the inning, scored from third on an illegal pitch to close out the scoring.
Clark added two more insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning with her second home run of the night. Clark, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI in the game, now leads the team in batting average (.571), hits (12), home runs (3) and RBI (18).
Auelua and Lindenberg were also hot at the plate. Auelua went 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Lindenberg went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
The USA has now outscored its opponents 67-0 and has out hit its opponents 70-6. The USA begins the playoffs tomorrow at 5 p.m. versus an opponent to be named later.
USA Softball continues to cruise at 2001 Pan Am Qualifier with 10-0 win over Mexico
Maracay, Venezuela---A one hour delay prior to the game and a one hour rain delay in the middle of the game couldn't dampen the USA Softball teams spirit today as it cruised past Mexico 10-0 in five innings.
Mexico held the USA scoreless for the first two innings but Jaime Clark (Tustin, CA) ended the scoreless draught in the bottom of the third. With Lauren Bauer (Santa Ana, CA) and Jenny Topping on base, Clark launched a home run that was estimated at over 250 feet.
Courtney Dale (Fresno, CA) worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the fourth inning to dispose of any Mexico scoring opportunity.
After a one hour rain delay, in which the teams worked to get the field prepared, the USA exploded for six runs on four hits and where aided by two Mexico errors. Kim DePaul (Houston, TX) led off with a walk, Keri McCallum (Port Orchard, WA) walked and Missy Hixon (Phoenix, AZ) reached on a fielding error to load the bases.
Following a pitching change, the third of the game, Toria Auelua (Garden Grove, CA) singled to center to score DePaul and McCallum. Hixon scored on a sacrifice fly by Bauer and Auelua scored on a single by Nichole Thompson (Irvine, CA).
Another pitching change didn't stop the USA bats as Topping doubled to left field and Jennie Finch (La Mirada, CA) singled to right field to score the final two runs of the inning.
It took only two batters in the bottom of the fifth to end the game for the USA. McCallum had a bunt single, stole second and scored on a single to right field to give the USA a 10-0 mercy victory.
Dale picked up the win for the USA allowing only two hits while striking out five. The USA is now 5-0 at the 2001 Pan Am Qualifier and has not allowed a run in its first five games.
Bauer's hitting streak ended at 15 games but she has reached base safely in the past 16 consecutive games. Clark leads the team in hitting with a .571 average and has a team leading 11 RBI.
Sharron adds another perfect game as USA defeats Brazil 9-0
Maracay, Venezuela---Jennifer Sharron (Agoura Hills, CA) continued to show the domination of USA pitching by throwing another perfect game at the 2001 Pan Am Qualifier to defeat Brazil 9-0. The USA improves to 4-0 and has thrown three perfect games in its first four contests.
The USA scored runs in the first five innings but couldn't get the final run across for the mercy rule victory. Jaime Clark (Tustin, CA) singled in the first inning to score Amy Chellevold (Tucson, AZ) and Jenny Topping (Whittier, CA) to give the USA an early 2-0 lead.
Toria Auelua (Garden Grove, CA) doubled down the right field line and scored on a single by Lauren Bauer (Santa Ana, CA) for the first run of the second inning. Bauer's single extends her hitting streak to 15 games dating back to June 30. She later scored on a single by Topping to increase the USA lead to 4-0.
In the third inning Kellie Wilkerson (Jacksonville, FL) was hit by a pitch and later scored on a passed ball. Auelua was credited with driving in the final two runs of the inning with a two out single to right field that plated Courtney Dale (Fresno, CA) and Kim DePaul (Houston, TX).
Clark picked up her third hit of the day in the fourth inning to drive in Chellevold who had walked to lead off the inning.
Bauer began a two-out rally in the top of the fifth inning with a single to center field and came around to score on back-to-back errors by the Brazilian infield to give the USA its final run of the game.
Clark is now hitting .636 (7-for-11) for the tournament with a team leading three doubles and eight RBI. Bauer is hitting .529 (9-for-17) with three home runs and five RBI.
Bauer continues hot streak as USA downs Bermuda 10-0
Maracay, Venezuela---The USA continued its dominance at the Pan Am Qualifier by pummeling Bermuda 10-0 in five innings. Lauren Bauer (Santa Ana, CA) continued to be the hitting star for the USA going 3-for-4, scoring two runs and driving in two more.
Bauer extended her hitting streak to 13 games with a lead-off bunt single in the bottom of the first inning and scored on a single by Nichole Thompson (Irvine, CA). Jaime Clark (Tustin, CA) laced a missile down the left field line to score Thompson and eventually scored on a throwing error by the third baseman.
The USA was shutout in the second inning but rebounded for two in the third. Nina Lindenberg led off the third with a single through the left side and Clark reached when she was hit by a pitch. Kellie Wilkerson (Jacksonville, FL) scored both with a single through the right side to give the USA a 5-0 lead.
Four more runs in the fourth gave the USA a 9-0 lead. Bauer led off with a solo home run to left center. Lindenberg doubled down the right field line and scored when Clark hit a routine fly ball that was muffed by the right fielder. Wilkerson then drove in her third RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Clark. Courtney Dale (Fresno, CA) added the final run of the inning with a blast to deep left field.
In the fifth, the USA needed only one run to end the game. It came early when Bauer led off with her second lead-off home run of the day to give the USA a 10-0 mercy rule win.
Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, CA) went the distance for the USA allowing only one hit while striking out eight and allowed no walks. The lone hit for Bermuda, a bloop single to right field, came in the top of the second inning .
