TUCSON - The University of Arizona freshmen opened the second day of practice much like the first, but closed the workout with the first offense vs. defense drills of fall camp.
The morning session lasted an hour and 45 minutes and once again, special teams was the focus for much of the first half of practice. Much of the work focused on identifying key personnel like long snappers, holders, punters and place kickers.
'We like to find specialists in every class,' said head coach John Mackovic, 'so that we can train them. It's always beneficial to identify such key personnel.'
It was the coaching staff's goal to put in a little more offense and defense into today's practice after spending much of Friday's workouts focusing on individual drills. That was certainly the case in the last half of the workout, as both the offense and defense worked out of base formations.
The session ended with a skeleton pas drill where the offense faced the defense for the first time this fall.
'We had a heck of a good workout today,' Mackovic said. 'The players who were nervous yesterday are doing better, and they are much more relaxed. Everyone did a nice job and we didn't have to hold anyone out. We focused more on teaching plays, the huddles and the snap counts in an offense/defense situation, and we will do more of that again this evening.'
The first full-squad Wildcat practice is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 8. Arizona will open the 2001 season on Thursday, Aug. 30, at San Diego State. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. PDT and will be televised on ESPN2.
