UW's Colleen Gray Reaches Semis Before Falling at ITA Summer Tennis Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Washington junior Colleen Gray won her quarterfinal match in the morning before falling in the semifinals to the fourth seed on Monday afternoon in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Summer Championships at Indiana University.
Gray won her fourth straight match of the tournament, posting a 6-1, 7-5 quarterfinal victory over Purdue's Gretchen Haynor, before suffering a 6-1, 6-1 semifinal setback to Kaysie Smashey of Texas. Smashey won her 11th consecutive collegiate match dating back to April.
A native of Granite Bay, Calif., Gray played No. 6 singles during the collegiate season and helped the Huskies to a No. 11 final ranking. Washington advanced to the quarterfinals at the NCAA team championships.
Smashey will meet Illinois' Jennifer McGaffigan in Tuesday's women's singles championship. Second-seeded McGaffigan beat Saber Pierce of Texas Christian 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals to advance. McGaffigan was the ITA Midwest Region Rookie Player of the Year last season and was also the point leader this summer for the Midwest portion of the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit.
The ITA National Summer Championships, presented by the USTA, are the pinnacle of the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit and are sanctioned by the USTA as the U.S. National Amateur Tennis Championships. The ITA National Summer Championships feature amateur (mainly collegiate) players from all over the country.
As the governing body of collegiate tennis the ITA promotes both the athletic and academic achievements of the collegiate tennis community. The ITA, which was founded in 1956 and is based in Princeton, N.J., administers numerous regional and national championships, the ITA Collegiate Summer Circuit, presented by the USTA, and the ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings for men's and women's tennis at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior College levels.
