Husky Newcomers Ready to Begin UW Careers
Aug. 14, 2001
Seattle - A total of 30 players, including 10 walkon players, reported to Washington on Wednesday and will begin the Huskies fall football camp on Wednesday. This year's class of newcomers has a unique family atmosphere.
All of the newcomers are freshmen except for Jeremy Adams, a transfer who played as a freshman at Southern University in 1999. Adams is the younger brother of current Baltimore Raven Sam Adams, who began his professional career in Seattle with the Seahawks. As a senior in high school, Jeremy lived with his older brother in the Seattle area and attended Redmond High School.
Husky freshman Evan Benjamin, a safety from Redmond, Wash., also has a Seahawks tie. His father, Tony, played professional for Seattle's NFL franchise. Benjamin's older sister, Paige, is a junior on the Washington volleyball team.
Freshman Will Conwell , from Kent, Wash., is the nephew of former Husky standout tight end Ernie Conwell. Conwell is currently a tight end for the St. Louis Rams.
First-year quarterback Casey Paus is the younger brother of UCLA starting quarterback Cory Paus. The passing Paus brothers hail from New Lenox, Ill.
Another passing combination among Washington's freshman class is between former Lakes High School standouts Reggie Williams and Matt Griffith. While Williams earned prep All-America honors, Griffith was high school quarterback, who is a walkon at Washington.
The arrival of Andy Heater from Snohomish, Wash. gives the Huskies their second father-son combination on the coaching staff. Heater's father, Chuck, is Washington's cornerbacks coach and recruiting coordinator. Defensive line coach Randy Hart's son John, is a senior fullback on the Husky squad.
The arrival of freshman wide receiver Charles 'E.T.'Fredrick continues Washington's 'Palm Beach Pipeline.' Fredrick joins former Pope John Paul II graduates John Anderson (junior, placekicker) and Rich Alexis (sophomore, tailback).
Washington freshman walkon tailback John Gardenhire is a second-generation Husky. His father, John, Sr., lettered at Washington from 1980 to 1981 as an offensive tackle. Gardenhire hails from Kent, Wash.
In addition to the Husky scholarship players, here is the list of walkon players also reporting for fall practice:
