Cal Baseball Players Having Outstanding Summer Seasons

Aug. 15, 2001

BERKELEY, CA - Several current and former Cal baseball players are enjoying outstanding summer seasons playing on various professional and semi-pro league teams.

Summer semi-pro leagues are winding down and Cal had three players stand out in the prestigious Cape Cod League. Junior catcher John Baker was a member of the Cape Cod League All-Star Team and finished the summer batting .250 with six doubles, two home runs and 20 RBI for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. Matt Brown and Trevor Hutchinson were impressive on the mound as Brown, a sophomore right-hander, went 2-2 with three saves, an impressive 0.56 ERA, and had only nine walks and 51 strikeouts in 32.3 innings for the Bourne Braves. Hutchinson, a senior right-hander, was 3-3 with a 1.47 ERA and had only seven walks and 44 strikeouts for the Orleans Cardinals.

Three former Golden Bears are regulars in the major leagues, All-Star second baseman Jeff Kent (1987-89) of the San Francisco Giants, outfielder Darren Lewis of the Boston Red Sox (1988) and utility man Geoff Blum (1992-94) of the Montreal Expos. Kent is batting .296 with 33 doubles, six triples, 15 home runs and 80 RBI. Lewis is hitting .250 with seven doubles, a triple, a home run and 10 RBI. Blum is batting .234 with 20 doubles, six home runs and 35 RBI.

In the Triple A level, right-handers Doug Nickle (1995-97) and Keith Evans (1994-96) are both excelling. Nickle is pitching for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons (Philadelphia Phillies) and is 7-1 with seven saves and a 1.37 ERA. He also has 30 walks and 53 strikeouts in 72.3 innings. Evans is equally impressive with a 7-2 record with one save and a 3.61 ERA for the Ottawa Lynx (Montreal Expos). He has only nine walks with 60 strikeouts in 72.3 innings pitched. Right-hander Ryan Drese (1995, '98) is also doing well pitching for Buffalo of the Cleveland Indians organization, going 4-1 with a 4.85 ERA and 13 walks and 39 strikeouts in 42.7 innings.

At the minor league Double A level, Jason Hill, Mike Tonis and Tyler Walker are all having solid seasons. Hill (1996-98) and Tonis (1998-00) are both catchers, with Hill playing for Arkansas of the Anaheim Angels organization and is batting .256 with 16 doubles, 10 home runs and 41 RBI. Tonis plays for Wichita in the Kansas City Royals organization and is hitting .282 with nine doubles, seven home runs and 36 RBI. Walker (1996-97) is a hard-throwing right-hander who plays for the New York Mets Binghamton club and is 1-0 with a 0.40 ERA, 13 walks and 13 strikeouts in 22.3 innings.

In Single A, Cal's all-time leader in home runs and RBI, Xavier Nady, is continuing his prowess at the plate. Playing for San Diego's Lake Elsinore squad, Nady is batting .299 with 34 doubles, a triple, 24 home runs and 85 RBI. Recent graduate Rob Meyer (1998-01) is having a stellar start to his minor league career for the San Francisco Giants Salem-Keizer team, batting .325 with 17 doubles, a triple, four home runs and 30 RBI. Right-hander David Cash (1999-01) is also starting his professional career on a high note, pitching for the San Jose Giants. Cash is 2-0 with one save and a 2.70 ERA, including 10 walks and 33 strikeouts in 26.3 innings.

Another Bear rookie who is performing well is left-hander Jason Dennis (1998-01), who is 4-0 with a 1.86 ERA, 14 walks, 68 strikeouts in 58.0 innings for Anaheim's Provo Rookie League team.

In all, Cal has a total of 19 players currently competing in professional baseball, including Jon Zuber (1989-92) who is playing for the Yokohama BayStars in the Japan league (.294, HR, 15 RBI as of July 11).
