UW Names Pettas Offensive Graduate Assistant
Aug. 15, 2001
Seattle - John Pettas has joined the 2001 Husky football coaching staff as a graduate assistant coach. Pettas will take over the offensive graduate assistant positioned vacated by Tarn Sublett, who accepted the position of wide receivers coach at the University of Idaho in July.
A former assistant coach for the San Francisco 49ers in 1992-93, Pettas brings over 25 years of coaching experience to a veteran Husky staff.
A 1974 graduate of Cal Poly-SLO, Pettas was the offensive coordinator at Arizona State during the 2000 season. Under Pettas, the Sun Devils led the Pac-10 in passing yards per game with 266.8, and finished fifth in the league in scoring at 26.9 points per game. Three members of the Sun Devils' offense earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors, including All-American tight end Todd Heap.
Prior to the 2000 season, Pettas spent three seasons as ASU's quarterbacks coach tutoring Ryan Kealy, who set several freshman passing records in 1997, earning freshman All-America honors.
