2001 Pre-Season Football Practice Update
Aug. 20, 2001
Austin Lee on replacing Willie Howard: You really don't replace guys like Willie. He was one of the best players in the country last year, a great leader on and off the field. Collectively, as a group, we have to pull together and pick up some of the slack. It'll be an overall group effort.
Eric Heitmann on the advantages of an experienced offensive line: The offensive line isa position where you have to be very knowledgeable of the offense. When you addexperience into the mix, I think that provides the offense with a greater degree of confidenceand composure. You know what the guy next to you is going to do because you've beenthere before and he's played there before.
Ruben Carter on the depth at the cornerback position: Whenever you have depth in aposition like cornerback, it's good. If one guy gets tired or goes down, when the guy behindhim goes in, it's like you don't even lose a step. When you have depth, you have trust thatno matter who is on the field, a play is going to get made. The best player is going to be outthere because the number one and number two have the same skill level, so you're not goingdown when your number one corner goes off the field and your number two comes on.
