Men's Soccer Ties Second Game in England
Aug. 20, 2001
The Washington men's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie against the Manchester City Reserves in the second match of its six-game preseason tour through England. The Huskies tied the Everton Reserves in the their first game of the tour last week.
The reserves are second-level players from Manchester City's Premiership team, at England's highest level.
Manchester got on the scoreboard early in the match, scoring off a header at 8 minutes, 10 seconds into the game. The team turned a set play that had poor clearance into a score when the ball bounced off the post and a Manchester player sent a header into the net.
The game went scoreless after that until Washington sophomore forward Bobby McAlister (Federal Way, Wash.) scored in the 58th minute. Senior forward Jake Sagare (Yakima, Wash.) collected the ball at midfield, ran at the defense and beat them down the middle for a shot. The rebound came out and McAlister was able to finish and even the score.
Manchester went ahead again when it used another header, near the far post, off a free kick to score at 68:30. The Huskies responded 10 minutes later when senior Ben Somoza (Edmonds, Wash.) found classmate Billy Sleeth (Spokane, Wash.) behind the defense and Sleeth cut the ball back to junior Kyle Fukuchi (Haleiwa, Hawaii) who found the back of the net.
'Our team showed a lot of character coming back twice after being a goal down,' Husky coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'We created far more goal scoring chances than we did in our first game against the Everton Reserves. For the second straight game we had a slow start though. We need to improve on that for our next game, against Blackburn Tuesday. But overall, it was a solid team effort by our team.'
The game was the first of four in a row for the Huskies, who meet the Blackburn Reserves in Ewood Park Tuesday afternoon.
