Williams Scores 16 as USA Slams South Africa 134-37

BEIJING, China - University of Oregon women's basketball player Shaquala Williams scored 16 points to help the USA Women's World University Games Team to a 134-37 victory Wednesday morning over South Africa.

Williams made 5 of 9 from the floor and 5 of 7 from the free-throw line along with collecting two steals in 17 minutes. Williams, a junior, also hit 1 of 3 from 3-point range. Ayana Walker of Louisiana Tech led all scorers with 27 points.

The USA team (1-0) next competes against Canada (1-0) at 5 a.m. Thursday PDT (1 p.m. local time).

The 2001 World University Games features 17 teams that have been divided into four preliminary round pools. The United States is in Pool B with Canada, Japan and South Africa. Tournament quarterfinals play gets underway Aug. 27, with semifinals being conducted Aug. 30 and the medal games being held Aug. 31.
