Aug. 23, 2001
Stanford, Calif. - Stanford University senior safety Tank Williams was named to the 2001 Pre-Season 'Watch List' for the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's best defensive back on Thursday.
Williams is a two-year starter for the Cardinal, and was a Second Team All-Pacific-10 Conference selection in 2000. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Williams was named Preseason First Team All-Pac-10 and Preseason Honorable Mention All-America by several publications this fall.
A year ago, Williams recorded 66 tackles (52 unassisted), three interceptions, three tackles-for-loss and one quarterback sack. For his career, he has posted 135 tackles (89 unassisted), six tackles-for-loss, four interceptions and three quarterback sacks.
'To be nominated with the top defensive backs in the country shows me that all the hard work has paid off,' Williams said.
The 'watch list' of 38 players will be narrowed down to 10 semifinalists in early November. Three finalists will be selected the Monday before Thanksgiving, and the winner will be announced on December 6 as a part of ESPN's College Football Awards Show.
