Soccer Suffers First Loss on England Tour

Aug. 23, 2001

Essex, London - The Washington men's soccer team suffered its first loss in the fifth and final game of its preseason tour through England, falling, 3-2, to the West Ham Reserves Thursday morning. The Huskies concluded their tour, the first of its kind for a Washington soccer team, with an overall record of 1-1-3 while playing reserve squads from some of the world's best known soccer franchises.

The Huskies got on the scoreboard early when sophomore Bobby McAlister (Federal Way, Wash.) connected on his second goal of the tour. Jake Sagare sent a shot towards the goal and McAlister finished with the rebound off the keeper at 15 minutes, 10 seconds into the match. West Ham evened the score just before the half when it took a shot from 18 yards out and the deflection went in at 40:11.

Washington pulled ahead in the second half after a corner kick that saw senior Zach Kingsley (Spokane, Wash.) hit a volley off the crossbar and follow his own shot into the net in the 58th minute.

It was not enough though, as West Ham scored two more times to seal the victory. Its second goal came in the 61st minute from the top of the 18-yard box and went into the upper corner. The game-winner was a shot from 25-yards out, again to the upper corner, in the 73rd minute.

'Four high quality, high demand matches in row really put us to the test,' said Husky coach Dean Wurzberger. 'We played probably the best of all four teams today and gave it everything we had. The effort was first class and overall, we are extremely pleased with the way the team performed. No question, the experience we have gained over here will serve us well this Fall and beyond.'

The team returns to Seattle Aug. 26 and immediately begins preparation for its season-opening weekend, at the UConn Soccer Classic in Storrs, Conn. The Huskies open with Fairleigh Dickinson, Aug. 31 and then meet host and defending national champion Connecticut, Sept. 1. Washington's first home game is Sept. 14 versus UC-Santa Barbara at Husky Soccer Stadium.
