UW Women's Soccer Scrimmage Ends in 2-1 Win for Griffin-Coached Squad
Aug. 25, 2001
SEATTLE - Senior forward Gina Brewer scored the winning goal with 12 minutes remaining, lifting Team Griffin to a 2-1 win over Team Sekyra in the Washington women's soccer team's intra-squad scrimmage, Saturday at Husky Soccer Field.
The game was played with a continuously running clock for three, 30-minute periods. Each team was coached by a Husky assistant coach. Amy Griffin's team wore dark jerseys and Chuck Sekyra's group was clad in white.
'I'm really pleased with them tonight. Playing 90 minutes with no subs right after double-days and everything else is pretty impressive. We wanted to check and see where our fitness level is and that was good,' said Head Coach Lesle Gallimore.
'We switched back-and-forth and played a couple different systems against different systems. We'll go and look at the tape and see how they did defensively and how they did in the attack. We're still in the phase of trying to figure out what the best combination of players is and sort of putting the puzzles pieces together. For that this scrimmage was really productive.'
Junior defender Suzanne Culpepper set up the decisive goal, serving a long cross into the goal mouth that Brewer flicked into the net from close range at 78:19.
Junior goalkeeper Hope Solo, an All-America candidate, preserved the victory for Team Griffin with back-to-back saves inside the final 10 minutes on point-blank shots by senior Caroline Putz and freshman Kelley Schweighart. Solo finished with eight saves.
A pair of freshmen teamed up for the first goal, putting Team Griffin ahead in the 23rd minute. Defender Kelli Smith dribbled the ball from deep inside her own side of the field and crossed midfield before feeding a long pass to Clare Rustad who booted it in from 18 yards out.
Team Sekyra tallied the equalizer at 57:05. Freshman Tina Frimpong dribbled into the box and drew several defenders to her before passing to senior Erin Otagaki for a shot directly in front of the open goal.
The scrimmage was the Huskies' final competitive tune-up before they open the regular season on Saturday (Sept. 1) at Utah State.
'Obviously they are really itching to play another team,' Gallimore remarked. 'Now that we have this behind us we can start focusing on a real opponent which is Utah State next Saturday. They are someone that we know relatively little about and its a place we've never played. There are some challenges to it.
'There are a lot of people that right now deserve playing time and only 11 play at one time so it's going to be fun in the first few games to see who rises to the top out of this group.'
