Brunson Qualifies For 100m Final at World University Games in Beijing

BEIJING, China -- Former Arizona State sprinting sensation Marcus Brunson won his first and second round heats in the 100m, qualifying for Tuesday's final and highlighting the opening day of track and field competition for Team USA at the World University Games in Beijing, China Monday.

Brunson, who placed third in the 100m at the 2001 NCAA Championships, won his first round heat in 10.31, before blowing away the competition in his second round heat in 10.23. Idrissa Andu of Burundi was a distant second in 10.47.

The Tempe, Ariz. native culminated his ASU career this past spring at the 2001 NCAA Championships, earning All-America honors in three events - the 100m, the 200m and the 4x400m relay. Brunson was named the 2001 USTCA West Region and Pac-10 Athlete of the Year and ended his collegiate campaign as a seven-time All-American.
