WSU Announces 2001-02 Men's Basketball Schedule
Aug. 28, 2001
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Washington State Men's Basketball Head Coach Paul Graham announced the Cougars 2001-02 schedule, Tuesday.
Of WSU's 27 games, 12 will be played against teams that advanced to the 2001 NCAA Tournament.
'I'm very excited about our schedule,' Graham said. 'It is a tough schedule for a team that is still relatively young. We have new faces, including two freshmen. We have some veterans, but none of them have played a schedule this tough. Our road games against Texas, Gonzaga (both 2001 NCAA Tournament teams) and Montana will be a test for us.'
The Cougars open the season Nov. 20 against Colorado State at the Spokane Arena. WSU makes its 2001-02 Pullman debut, Nov. 24, hosting Prairie View A&M.
Arguably the most difficult part of the Cougars' schedule will run Dec. 10-Jan. 10. WSU plays seven games in that span, beginning with the Texas game. The Cougars play Gonzaga, Dec. 15 before returning home to open Pacific-10 Conference play against UCLA, Dec. 22.
Due to return of the Pac-10 Tournament (March 7-9 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles), the conference schedule has several changes this season. After hosting UCLA, the Cougars will not play for a week when USC comes to Pullman, Dec. 29. WSU will be finished with the Los Angeles schools early as the first conference road trip comes the following week at USC at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif. (Jan. 4) and at UCLA (Jan. 6). The seven-game stint ends Jan. 10 with WSU hosting Arizona.
'That stretch will be tough for our basketball team,' Graham said. 'We will have to be well prepared for those games.'
After conference play, the Cougars will conclude their regular season at home against Centenary, March 2.
