No. 5 Women's Soccer Blanks Pacific 4-0 in Season Opener

Aug. 31, 2001

BERKELEY - No. 5 California opened the 2001 season with a convincing 4-0 shutout of Pacific Friday afternoon in the Cal Invitational at Edwards Stadium. In the first game of the tournament, Loyola Marymount upset No. 24 Michigan, 3-2, despite being outshot 19-10. All four team opened their seasons today.

'Four different people scoring goals is an indicator of what we felt all along, which is that we're pretty dangerous in the attack,' Cal coach Kevin Boyd said. 'The biggest success in the shutout was our backline play. When everyone looks at our team, they're going to question our backline and our goalkeeping, and we got a shutout.'

It took three years, but Cal also was finally able to avenge a 2-1 NCAA Tournament loss to Pacific in 1998.

Sophomore forward Kassie Doubrava, who came on as a substitute for Krysti Whalen in the 20th minute, scored her first career goal to put Cal ahead 1-0 in the 27th minute. The goal was set up by a long serve from junior defender Ashley Mueller, who found Doubrava's head inside the six-yard box.

Senior forward Kyla Sabo sent the Bears into the locker room up 2-0 when she converted on a shot from 15-yards out in the 30th minute. Junior defender Kim Stocklmeir was credited with the assist.

The Bears offense also was strong in the second half as defenders continued to have an impact on the attack. Sophomore defender Lucy Brining tallied her second career goal in the 59th minute off a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Kim Yokers.

Cal fans got to see All-American and U.S. U-21 forward Laura Schott provide an insurance goal at the start of the 66th minute. After some crafty passing between Yokers and Stocklmeier, Schott found the back of the net from a difficult angle on the left side of the field.

Freshman goalkeeper Mallory Moser was forced to make just two saves in her collegiate debut for the Bears.

In the earlier game, LMU bolted out to a 2-0 lead and held on after Laura Trask netted her second goal of the game to put the Lions up 3-1.

The Cal Invitational continues Sunday at 2 p.m. with Loyola Marymount facing Pacific. Cal and Michigan square off at 4:30 p.m.
