Women's Volleyball Sweeps Alumni In First Outing

Los Angeles, Calif. -- No. 2 USC women's volleyball made its first appearance of 2001 with a preseason exhibition match against USC alumni. The current squad defeated the alumni 30-14, 30-21, 15-12 in a 40-minute match utilizing the new rally scoring format.
Two freshman posted impressive performances in the first outing. Outside hitters Alicia Robinson (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Keao Burdine (La Habra, Calif.) contributed 10 kills apiece while scoring 11.5 and 10.5 points, respectively. (Under the new scoring system, players will tally points for every kill, block or ace they contribute.)
Sophomore Kelli Lantz (Bakersfield, Calif.) led with a .600 attack percentage (6-0-10), sophomore Nicole Davis (Stockton, Calif.) accumulated 10 digs and sophomore Katie Olsovsky (Torrance, Calif.) contributed a team-high four blocks. Setters Toni Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Tracy Lindquist (Fountain Valley, Calif.) shared time on both sides of the net.
The Alumni squad featured former Trojan greats Laurie Hill (1993-96), Cica Baccelli (1991-92), Sara Peterson (1997-00), Lauri Yust (1991-94), Jeanne Vetter (1994-97), Bonny Brunst (1993-96), Janae Henry (1997-00) and Christine Bohle (1997-98).
The Women of Troy open the regular season tomorrow (Sept. 1) at 5 p.m. against UC Irvine at the UCI Invitational. On Sunday (Sept. 2), USC faces No. 4 Wisconsin at 5 p.m. in Irvine.
