Cross Country Teams Open Season By Dominating Jammin' Invitational

Brea, Calif. - Stanford dominated both the men's and women's competition to win a pair of team titles at the Cal State Fullerton Jammin' Invitational in the season opener for the Cardinal at Carbon Canyon Park on Saturday. Sean Knapp recorded a personal-best 24:32.6 to win the men's 8000 meter race, while Mariel Ettinger won her season-opening race for the second consecutive year with a time of 17:33.1 in the women's 5000 meter race.

The Cardinal men totaled 25 points to easily outdistance second-place Team CBU (64 points). The Cardinal had four of the top six runners with Andrew Hill (3rd, 24:41.3), James Nielsen (4th, 24:42.9) and Isaac Hawkins (24:50.4) joining Knapp among the top six. Joe Urbanski (11th, 25:06.2), Steve Loughlin (21st, 25:44.3), Philip West (25th, 25:51.5), Jamey Gifford (29th, 25:54.1) and David Stillman (31st, 25:58.0) also competed for the Cardinal.

In the women's competition, Stanford totaled 18 points and finished well ahead of second-place UCLA (51 points) by capturing the first four places with Ettinger, Caroline Annis (2nd, 17:34.4), Laura Turner (3rd, 17:42.9) and Erin Sullivan (4th, 17:45.5). Victoria Chang (8th, 18:03.3) and Katie Hotchkiss (9th, 18:05.4) also had Top 10 finishes, while Colleen Flaherty (13th, 18:23.8) and Maurica Carlucci (19th, 18:37.5) had Top 20 showings. Lauren Gustafson finished 38th with a time of 19:28.7.

Stanford will next compete when the Cardinal hosts the Stanford Invitational on Saturday, September 29.
