UW Women Open Soccer Season with 4-1 Victory
Sept. 1, 2001
LOGAN, Utah - Sophomore Jaime Carstensen scored the first two goals and assisted on the third, helping the ninth-ranked Washington women's soccer team open the season Saturday with a 4-1 victory over Utah State at Aggie Field.
The first two goals were both unassisted tallies by Carstensen who scored just one goal during her entire freshman season. She opened the scoring in the seventh minute, booting the ball into the net from three yards out. Her second goal, at 20:58, was a 22-yard blast into the right corner.
Less than one minute later, senior Caroline Putz scored from directly in front of the goal. A native of Bountiful, Utah, Putz scored at 21:50 off a pass from Carstensen. It was the 18th career goal for Putz, tying her with Melinda Torre for fifth among all-time Husky scorers.
Utah State (0-2) had only two shots, but converted its first attempt. Reserve Claire Schend placed a ball into the left corner from point-blank range at 24:33.
The Huskies (1-0) are coming off their best season ever. They finished the 2000 season with an 18-3 record, won their first Pacific-10 Conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament's round of 16.
Seven players made their collegiate debuts for Washington on Saturday, including sophomore Lisa Walker (Highline HS) who replaced All-America goalkeeper Hope Solo in the 77th minute. Walker is expected to start two games next weekend while Solo is in Chicago training with the U.S. National Team.
Neither goalkeeper made a save for Washington which outshot the Aggies 21-2. Utah State's Tracy Brady had three first-half saves before being replaced at halftime by Megan Mills who registered four saves.
Three freshmen were in the starting 11 for Washington, including forward Tina Frimpong (Hudson's Bay HS), defender Nicole Martinez (Redmond HS) and midfielder Clare Rustad, a member of the Canadian National Team.
The Huskies remain in Logan to play Northwestern on Monday (Sept. 3).
