Volleyball Serves Its Way Past Purdue In Four Games
Sept. 1, 2001
SEATTLE - UW senior center blocker Allison Richardson (Hemet, Calif.) had a double-double and a career-best seven service aces as the Washington volleyball team defeated Purdue in four games, 30-18, 26-30, 30-20, 30-18, Saturday morning in day two action of the Point Huskies Invitational Tournament. With the win, the Huskies, who had 16 total service aces in the match, moved to 1-1 on the season, while the Boilermakers fell to 0-2.
Richardson had her second double-double in as many days, leading the Huskies in kills with 16 and in digs with 14. Three other UW players reached double-digit kills including freshman Vanessa Gilliam (Fairfield, Calif.), who had 13, senior Lisa Underhill (Vista, Calif.), who tallied 11, and junior Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.), who added 10. Benjamin also posted a career-best five service aces, while freshman Kaitlin Leck (Carson City, Nev.) had three of her own.
After a game one Huskies' victory, Purdue broke a 25-25 tie in game two and went on a 4-1 run before blocking a Richardson hitting attempt to even the match at one game apiece. The UW, however, regained its composure and cruised to a 30-20 game-three win and a 30-18 victory in game four.
In the other match of the morning, Texas upset 11th-ranked BYU in five games, rallying from a 0-2 deficit to win 15-13 in the fifth and deciding game. With the win, the Longhorns are the only undefeated team in the tournament at 2-0, while the Cougars fell to an even 1-1.
All four teams will be back in action later this evening for the final two matches of the tournament. Purdue will face BYU at 5:30 p.m., which will be followed by the Washington-Texas game at 7:30 p.m.
