Women's Soccer Wins Falcon Invitational, Topping Air Force 3-1

Sept. 2, 2001

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Oregon State University's women's soccer team topped Air Force 3-1 Sunday afternoon to win the Falcon Invitational and junior Katie Henderson was named the offensive most valuable player for the tournament after scoring three goals and recording a pair of assists in the two-game Invitational.

Henderson, a native of Littleton, CO, helped the Beavers to a 1-0 halftime lead, scoring at 40:50 on a header off of Lindsey Beam's corner kick.

AFA knotted things up after the break when midfielder Beth Boyer fired a penalty kick to the upper left corner in the 46th minute.

The game remained tied as both teams had several opportunities in the next 20 minutes.

'It was a good battling performance,' commented OSU head coach Steve Fennah. 'We looked very good going forward and made some adjustments defensively that kept things solid.'

Senior Whitney Horn gave the Beavers the lead for good as she netted a header off of Beem's corner kick in the 70th minute.

'We had an excellent series on both corners,' said Fennah.

Henderson iced the game at 83:14 when she blasted a shot from 15 yards out that deflected off of AFA keeper J.J. Wolf's outstretched hands. OSU freshman Emily Hughes earned the first assist of her career on the play.

The goal marked Henderson's third of the season and 12th of her career, moving her into 10th place for goals scored in the Oregon State career record book.

Air Force had several golden opportunities late in the game that were denied by Beaver keeper Jo Fletcher.

'Jo (Fletcher) made some good saves for us,' commented Fennah.

Fletcher, a transfer from University of Kentucky, made several diving stops while recording seven saves on the afternoon.

OSU had 14 total shots, eight on goal while AFA had 13 total shots with eight on goal.

'Overall it was a good game against a good Air Force team that plays well on their home field,' said Fennah.

The Beavers return to Corvallis to face Purdue University at 5 p.m. Friday in their home opener.
