Sept. 4, 2001
SEATTLE - UW center blocker Allison Richardson (Hemet, Calif.) had a team-high 17 kills and 10 blocks as the Husky volleyball team outlasted Denver Tuesday in five games, 15-30, 30-23, 30-26, 23-30, 15-8, at Hamilton Gymnasium in Denver, Colo. With the win, the Huskies moved to an even 2-2 following their first away match, while the Pioneers fell to 2-3 in 2001.
Richardson, whose 10 blocks were a career high, has led the UW in kills in three of the team's four matches so far this season. Senior Lisa Underhill (Vista, Calif.) had 10 kills on .471 hitting, while junior Paige Benjamin (Redmond, Wash.) added 12 kills to go along with six blocks. The Huskies also got notable efforts from junior setter Gretchen Maurer (San Clemente, Calif.), who had a career-best 53 assists, and senior defensive specialist Britni Churnside (Eugene, Ore.), who reached double digits in digs for the third straight match.
After dropping the first game, 15-30, Washington rallied to grab the next two, 30-23 and 30-26, as the Pioneers hit just .037. Denver, however, rebounded to take the fourth game 30-23, before the Huskies dominated the 15-point rally scoring fifth game, knocking down nine kills on 19 attempts with just one error to win the game and the match, 15-8.
Denver's Andrea Baron led both teams with 20 kills, while setter Clarice Golesh-Burch added six service aces.
The Huskies will be back in action Friday when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., for a four-team tournament at the Air Force Academy, September 7-8. Washington takes on both Illinois-Chicago and Southeastern Louisiana on Friday, followed by a Saturday evening match with the host Falcons.
