Beavers Come From Behind To Defeat UC Irvine In Five Games
Sept. 7, 2001
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Gina Schmidt hit .523 with a season-high 26 kills to lead the Oregon State volleyball team to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over UC Irvine in the first match of the Fiesta Bowl Tournament on Friday. Game scores were 31-33, 26-30, 30-17, 30-21 and 15-6.
The Beavers (4-1) let a 27-21 lead slip away in the first game, while the Anteaters (1-3) capitalized on OSU errors late in the second game to break away from a 22-22 tie in that game to go up, 2-0.
'Had we controlled the tempo in the first two games like we did in games three, four and five, the match would have been over in three games,' coach Nancy Somera said.
Down 5-4 in game three, the Beavers scored nine straight points to take a 13-5 lead and never looked back from there. With Monica Meihack taking over the setting duties for the Beavers in the third game, OSU hit .405, its best effort of the first three games. Schmidt and Amanda Eggert combined for 13 of OSU's 17 kills in that game, with neither committing an error. The duo had the last four kills of the game to keep the match alive for the Beavers.
OSU kept the momentum going into the fourth game, when the Beavers jumped out to a 5-1 lead and forced UCI to take an early timeout. Later down 16-8, the Anteaters took another timeout and eventually inched their way back in the game to make it a three-point game at 19-16 after capitalizing on six OSU hitting errors during their rally. Laura Collins came back in as OSU's setter, and the Beavers scored three straight points to keep UCI from getting back into the game.
The Beavers rallied to a 7-1 lead in the deciding contest and put the match in the books with K.C. Frederic's sixth kill of the match. It was OSU's second five-game win of the season.
'Even though we played way under our potential a lot of the time, you can never be too upset when you have a 2-0 deficit and come back to win in five even when you're not at your best. Good teams find a way to win,' Somera said.
Schmidt, who also led the Beavers with 11 digs, brought her streak of consecutive double-doubles to five, with one in every match this season. Her 11 digs against the Anteaters moved her into 10th place on OSU's career digs list with 872.
Eggert provided a huge spark off the bench for the Beavers by hitting .846 with a career-high 11 kills and three blocks in four games.
OSU also got double-figure kills from Joscelyn Hannaford, who chipped in 12 kills and hit .360 for the Beavers.
The Beavers will face Radford at 5 p.m. as the Fiesta Bowl Tournament continues Friday night.
