Cal Volleyball Tops Florida Atlantic, 3-0, In First Day of Golden Bear Classic

BERKELEY, CA - The University of California women's volleyball team (3-1) defeated Florida Atlantic (0-5), 3-0 (30-19, 30-28, 30-20), in the opening round of the Golden Bear Volleyball Classic Friday night at Haas Pavilion. In the other first round match, Tennessee (3-1) defeated Rice (3-3), 30-21, 30-28, 30-26. The Bears will now face Tennessee in the championship match, Saturday at 7 p.m., while Rice will take on Florida Atlantic in the consolation match at 5 p.m.
Cal was led by sophomore Gabrielle Abernathy's 11 kills, and 10 kills apiece by junior Reena Pardiwala and freshman Camille Leffall. Pardiwala (10 kills, no errors in 14 attempts) and Leffall (10 kills, no errors, 12 attempts) also finished with outstanding hitting percentages at .714 and .833, respectively. Junior Caity Noonan led the Bears with 15 kills and Pardiwala and sophomore Jessica Zatica had a team-high three service aces apiece.
Cal had two impressive comebacks against the Owls to win the match in three games. In the second game, the Bears were down 26-23, before rallying to win 30-28. In the third game, Zatica came into the contest with Cal down 20-14, and rattled off several tough serves, including three aces, to lead the Bears to a 30-20 win.
In the first match of the evening, Tennessee was led by junior middle blocker Janelle Hester's team-high 20 kills and .447 hitting percentage. Rice was led by freshman Rebeca Pazo's 12 kills.
