Men's Soccer Drops Overtime Heartbreaker To Santa Clara, 2-1
Sept. 7, 2001
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - - Overtime hasn't been kind to the Oregon State men's soccer team thus far this season, as the Beavers (0-3-0) have dropped two games in extra sessions after Friday night's 2-1 double-overtime loss at the hands of Santa Clara (2-1-0) at the University of San Francisco's Diadora Classic.
After falling behind 1-0 in the eighth minute on a Scott McLain score, OSU sophomore Stephen Hensor knotted the match for the Beavs when he tallied his first career goal in the second half on a well-orchestrated set piece. Ignacio Cid and Christian vanBlommestein strung together a set of passes to Hensor that he headed in for a near-post goal early in the 57th minute.
OSU had a chance to tie the game at the 25-minute mark when Santa Clara fouled OSU in the penalty box, giving the Beavers a penalty kick. OSU couldn't capitalize though, as Cid put his kick high with 8:48 remaining.
'We got beat up tonight, but I thought we came out very strong in the first five minutes,' OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. 'We gave up a bad goal and then missed the penalty kick, which would have tied it. The guys battled though, they didn't get deflated, and they stayed in the game.'
OSU came out kicking in the second half, doubling their first-half shot output with four tries. The pressure paid off when Hensor netted his score to tie the game. OSU's defense stiffened as well, with sophomore goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer recording six saves on the night.
After neither team broke through in the remainder of regulation, OSU had a chance to put the game away in the first overtime, but couldn't connect.
'The guys worked extremely hard in the second half to tie the game up,' Taylor said. 'We had a golden opportunity in the first overtime, but then they came back and put it away on a set piece.'
Santa Clara senior Jeff Stewart ended the game with his first goal of the season at the 114:06 mark, giving the Beavers their second one-goal loss to the Broncos in as many seasons. OSU dropped a 1-0 decision last year to the Broncos.
'We've had some hard games to start the season, and we're a little banged up, but the guys are battling. We just need to get their spirits up again and get ready for Sunday.'
The Beavers wrap up their stay in the Bay area with a match against San Francisco on Sunday at 2 p.m.
