Volleyball Sweeps Opening Round at Air Force Tourney

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The Washington volleyball team did not lose a game as it won a pair of matches in three games each on the first day of competition at the Air Force Invitational at Cadet Gymnasium. The Huskies defeated Illinois-Chicago by scores of 30-19, 30-20 and 30-23 in the morning match and followed with another three-game victory over Southeast Louisiana, 30-23, 30-25 and 30-18 in the evening.

Washington improves to 4-2 on the season with the victories.

Senior center blocker Allison Richardson led the Husky effort against SE Louisiana with a match-high 18 kills and fellow senior Britni Churnside added 13 digs. As a team, Washington hit .347 and registered 14 blocks to the Lions four. For Richardson, it was the fifth time in six matches she has led her team in kills. Junior setter Gretchen Maurer tallied 48 assists in the match, nearly reaching her career effort 53 assists set four days earlier.

In the first match, Kaitlin Leck had 13 kills and Paige Benjamin and senior Lisa Underhill each added 10 kills for the Huskies. Washington hit .347 as a team, while the Flames hit just .086.

Washington continues tournament play when it meets host Air Force at 7 p.m. MT, Sat., Sept. 8.
