Sept. 7, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University's women's soccer team dropped its home opener to Purdue University, 2-0, on Friday evening.
The Beavers and the Boilermakers battled to a scoreless tie in the opening half of action but Purdue took advantage of a defensive breakdown to score in the 71st minute of play.
Lauren Sesselmann's direct kick found Elise Berry who headed the ball into the left corner of the net to put the Boilermakers on top 1-0.
Purdue added an insurance goal when Courtney Coppedge booted a ball from 10-yards out past the out-stretched arms of a diving Jo Fletcher at the 80:29 mark.
'We gave two goals away today and beat ourselves,' commented OSU head coach Steve Fennah.
The Beavers finished the match with 13 total shots and seven shots on goal while Purdue took 14 shots and six on goal.
Oregon State threatened to score several times early in the second half but Boilermaker keeper Elizabeth Boldt held the Beavers at bay, recording seven saves in the match.
'Overall we played fine, we just need to cut out the simple errors,' said Fennah. 'It was a game we should have won.'
