Sept. 8, 2001
LINCOLN, NE - The No. 7 UCLA women's volleyball team made quick work of No. 12 Pepperdine on Saturday afternoon at the US Bank/Arby's Classic in Lincoln, NE. The match lasted just one hour, 20 minutes as game scores were 30-13, 30-21, 30-24. The Bruins remain undefeated at 5-0 with the win, as Pepperdine falls to 3-2 with the loss.
The Bruins took control of the match from the start, blazing to a .500 hitting percentage with just one hitting error and went unblocked as a team in the entire first game, while five Bruin blocks helped the Waves to a .000 attack percentage for the game. UCLA capitalized on a seven-point serving run by Ashley Bowles, who posted three service aces during that stretch. The Bruins also spread their offense around, with three players having three kills apiece during game one.
Pepperdine started game two playing tough, keeping the score tied to the 4-4 mark before the Bruins once again started building a lead. With UCLA ahead 15-9, the Waves recorded their first block of the match, forcing UCLA into just its second attack error of the day. That block sparked a Pepperdine rally, as the Waves closed the gap to five points at 19-14 before UCLA took control again, eventually winning the game 30-21 to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room.
UCLA actually improved its team hitting percentage in the second game of the match, hitting .556 to Pepperdine's .289, and bringing the Bruin attack percentage for the match to .532. Kristee Porter and Lauren Fendrick led the way offensively at the break with Porter tallying an error-free 11 kills on 15 swings for a .773 attack percentage, while Fendrick was also error-free, hitting .529 with nine kills and 17 attacks.
The Waves did not give up after the break, keeping the match close and forcing ties as late as 13-13. UCLA, however, continued its efficient attack, winning the match 3-0 with a third game score of 30-24.
For the match, Porter had 20 kills on 27 swings with no errors, for a .741 attack percentage. That mark is the best attack percentage in UCLA women's volleyball history for a player with more than 20 attacks in a match, and it is the first error-free match of Porter's UCLA career. Also in double figure kills for UCLA was Ashley Bowles, who tallied 13 kills, 14 digs and four service aces in the match.
The Bruins out-blocked the Waves by an 8-4 margin, and spread the blocking around as four different players had three blocks in the match, including Fendrick, Angela Eckmier and Brynn Murphy with three block assists apiece and Porter, who had one solo block and two block assists. UCLA hit .398 for the match with just 10 attack errors as a team.
The Bruins complete their weekend schedule on Sunday afternoon at 3:30, taking on the host school, No. 1 Nebraska in the final match of the US Bank/Arby's Classic.
