Men's Soccer Defeats Wm. & Mary
Sept. 9, 2001
Portland, Ore. - The No. 2 Washington men's soccer team scored three first half goals and held on to win, 3-2, over No. 16 William & Mary in the second round of the adidas Portland Invitational at Merlo Field. The Huskies, defending champions of the tournament, finished with a mark of 1-1 for the weekend, after falling to No. 8 Indiana, 1-0, in the first round.
The Huskies, who have played three ranked teams in their first four games, improve to 3-1-0. The Tribe drops to 2-2-0.
Washington jumped started the game when freshman forward Brett Wiesner (Brookfield, Wisc.) took a shot, collected his own rebound and put the ball in the net just 45 seconds into the match.
Senior Ben Somoza (Edmonds, Wash.) capitalized on a penalty kick for the second goal at 17:53 and then William & Mary got on the board in the 31st minute when a free kick by Doug Henry went to Ralph Bean, who headed it into the net.
The Huskies tallied their third and final goal shortly before the end of the first half when Seth Marsh (Federal Way, Wash.) collected a corner kick by Somoza and knocked it in the goal. The Tribe narrowed the gap when it scored on a penalty kick at 73:15.
Husky sophomore Dan Waltman (Gig Harbor, Wash.) saw his first action of the season in goal and went the distance for the win, making one save in the effort. Washington held the advantage in shots, 15-9, and corner kicks, 11-5. William and Mary's keeper registered six saves in the game.
Washington makes its 2001 home debut Friday, Sept. 14 when it hosts UC-Santa Barbara in a 7 p.m. match at Husky Soccer Stadium.
